Back to School Writing Tips for Business Owners
Reading, writing and arithmetic…three important concepts learned in school that carry over to all aspects of life, especially for business owners! This is why it is so important to stay on top of your writing skills; you need to be able to make your messages clear through written public relations and social media marketing efforts.
Here are 4 writing tips learned in school that still apply today:
- Create an Outline. Although you might not formally make an outline like you did in school, take the time to think about what you want to convey and how you plan to communicate it. For example, when starting a blog post, come up with a topic for the post, figure out what the main points are and then start writing.
- Proofread. Spelling matters (that’s why there are so many spelling tests in school!) In addition to giving you more credibility, spelling and using words correctly makes your point clearer. After all, there’s a big difference in meaning between words like “to” and “too.” Remember that everything – from your website to your social media marketing efforts – is a reflection
of your business! If spelling isn’t your strong suit, try relying less on spellcheck from Word to become stronger at spelling when you’re not alone.
- Mind Your Deadlines. Set deadlines for yourself and then stick to them! No, you won’t get a bad grade or “incomplete” if you don’t finish that e-newsletter in time, but there are consequences for procrastinating: potential loss of business! Studies and statistics show that the more consistent your blogging and social media marketing efforts are, the more sales leads you bring into your company.
- Ask for Help. In school, if you’re not sure how to do something or want more direction, the best course of action is to go to your teacher for help. Although it’s not quite as clear who you should approach for advice, don’t be afraid to ask for a hand! In the end, getting a little bit of assistance from a company like Three Girls Media can go a long way when it comes to getting the word out about your business.
