Social Media Services: What Mistakes Are You Making?

Social media services can be an effective tool for marketing your business and cost-effective making them an excellent marketing strategy for small businesses. However, when first developing a social media marketing strategy, it’ easy to make some mistakes. Mistakes could mean negative publicity for your business. Below are four social media marketing mistakes you should avoid.

1.      Social Media Services Are Not All Created Equally – Many businesses treat their social media networks all the same, which is something you don’t want to do with your social media marketing. Each social media service is different. A specific social media network will have its own language, customers and audience. It’s important to learn how people are communicating and sharing on each site when developing your social media marketing strategy.

Many businesses don’t take the time to individualize their social media marketing across the various social media networks. By sending the same message across multiple networks you are giving the impression of being impersonal and fake. You can avoid this by implementing a social media marketing strategy when writing and posting. Before you start writing, take the time to observe how your followers on the various social media services respond to your content. When are they engaged and what are they responding to? tweetAnswering these questions will make your posts more effective and will help you create a better social media marketing strategy. Once you have this figured out, write your updates while making sure they are different for the various social media services you use.

2. Ignoring Who Your Audience Is – Some businesses make the mistake in their social media marketing campaign of not learning who their customers are. You can constantly add people to your social media network from anywhere and everywhere and maybe get some positive feedback at first. However, if you don’t educate yourself on who is actually following your social media network, the followers will be useless. Research who your audience is, so that you can gear your social media updates towards them, which will make them more interested and boost sales.

3. Lacking a Social Media Bio – When a Facebook fan checks out your company page, the first thing they see is your company’s bio. The bio is an opportunity for you to share your businesses’ location, website and even a little blurb about what your business does. If you don’t include this, you are missing an important opportunity with your social media marketing. People won’t want to follow your social media network if they don’t know what your company does. Assuming they know who you are is missing an opportunity to market yourself; even large brands take the time to fill out their social media bio.

4. Stressing Over Follower Count – Lots of businesses spend time worrying about how many followers they have. The follower count does not always correlate with sales. It matters more who is following you. Your business will benefit more from having followers that engage with your brand and share your content. These followers will be advocates for your brand by being committed customers as well as sharing your company with their friends and family.
